The Role of High Horsepower Generators in the Success of Synchronization of Diesel Gensets

admin@powerrentalDevelopmentNo Comments

A generator plays a very important role at a power plant site! And hence, selecting a generator for a power plant site is a significant decision, and that too selecting a high horsepower generator! Is a high horsepower generator required in the synchronization of Diesel Gensets?

If yes then, what is the role of high horsepower generators in the success of the synchronization of Diesel Gensets?

Let us find out!

What is a Generator?

Generators are devices that supply electrical power during power outages and keep running daily activities and business operations too. They are also known as DG sets. These DG sets do the work of running operations smoothly during routine tasks at electric power plants. DG sets can be rental DG sets or you can purchase them too. Generator sets also serve as backup power sources to keep different types of power plants running during power outages.

A DG set or a generator is a device that converts mechanical energy obtained from an external source into electrical energy as the output. The important point to note here is that a DG set or a generator does not actually create electrical energy. Generator sets are the primary sources of electrical supply during power outages.

Need to know what horsepower is?

A measure of engine power is Horsepower. Horsepower is also used to describe the amount of work done by machines such as pumps and generators. For example, a small generator may work with a horsepower of 5, while a large diesel engine generator requires a horsepower of 500.

1 horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts (W) or 0.746 (kW) approximately.

Generally, when determining how much horsepower generator a power plant needs – one factor to consider is how much load (KW) is your generator going to pick up when it starts and loads. Electrical motors and generators require large amounts of power to start. One commonly used approach is to assume that in a micropower plant, all connected loads will start in a single step. This results in the largest gen-set selection, which will require high horsepower.

Synchronization of Diesel Gensets

Synchronization of different Diesel Gensets is nothing but a micropower plant, which is a power system that generates electricity to serve a nearby load. Such a system may employ any combination of electrical generation and storage technologies and devices such as portable diesel generators, load banks, transformers, etc., and maybe grid-connected or may be separate from any transmission grid. This synchronization can be the automatic synchronization of generators or it can be a synchronization done purposefully to create a power supply.

In such a plant, multiple power sources can operate in parallel or it is a group of running diesel generators in synchronization that may or may not be connected with the grid power supply. You need not necessarily buy this equipment like generators, load banks or transformers, etc. These generators can be rental generators serving the purpose.

Some examples are wind–diesel system serving an isolated village, a solar–battery system serving a remote load, or a grid-connected natural gas microturbine providing electricity and heat to a factory.

Synchronization of Diesel Gensets

A power failure is very much risky as it could cause significant consequences for humans and the environment. In any business or service, a sudden loss of power at a certain moment could lead to anything from traffic accidents to failed medical procedures. Hence, reliable energy is necessary for maintaining safe, accident-free facilities.

Power plants need certain contingency plans in place so that if a failure occurs, they can restore power quickly and safely and avoid the consequences of an extended interruption.

Many power plant managers choose diesel backup generators as they offer several benefits when compared with other generators.

Let us look at the various aspects of the role of high horsepower generators in the success of the synchronization of Diesel Gensets!

  • Mostly diesel generators are used at various power plants core to power communities with coal, nuclear, natural gas, hydro, or other green energy sources.
  • Power plants require redundant power to ensure functions continue at all times and through any outage and to fulfill the constant energy demand. The High horsepower generators provide this redundant power and they also help keep personnel at power plants safe.
  • Diesel generator sets have several benefits over other generators.
  • Generally, micropower plants are present in remote locations. They are most helpful in areas where there is no power grid and businesses depend on local power generation and fuel storage.
  • Thus, due to this remoteness, these plants rely heavily on the use of diesel generators for power generation, and hence, high horsepower generators prove to be helpful in such scenarios.
  • These remote plants must also store large amounts of diesel nearby as part of an emergency plan for a power outage.

Thus, these are the various reasons that prove the role of high horsepower generators in the success of synchronization of Diesel Gensets!
